About the Collaboration and Exhibition

The 25th Annual Poet Artist Collaboration event at Red Wing Arts features 25 Poets and 25 Artists participating in an art exhibit of collaborative artworks and poems, poetry events, and the creation of a chapbook featuring all artwork and poetry. Poets and artists applied for the opportunity, and from the selected poems, invited artists created a new piece of art inspired by the words.

Kelly Schamberger selected the poem “Nativity” by poet Catherine Galascione, and created a small oil painting titled “Rebirth.” The painting and poem are currently on display in the gallery.

The Poet Artist Collaboration began in 2000 when Beverly Voldseth Allers, member of a Northfield writing group and writer for the local paper, approached Marie Marvin at Crossings at Carnegie in Zumbrota, MN, with an idea. Beverly said, “What if poets wrote for the artists and artists illustrated the writing?” Marie loved this concept, and with her passion nurtured this collaborative event until she passed the baton to Red Wing Arts in 2020.

Today, the event is as strong as ever and continues to give poets a much-needed opportunity to share their work. Both minds are expanded: the poet who shares their words as art and the artist who uses their craft to interpret the words. Together they provide a gift to art appreciators and the community.
