After our peaceful day at Fort De Soto Beach in Florida, we headed over to Pass-a-Grille to visit the Paradise Grille, a little burger shack along the coast. This is THE place where locals go to watch the brilliant fluorescent orange sun slowly sink below the waves surrounded by a symphony of brilliant hues.
With our virgin piña coladas in hand, we sprawled out at a table, took in the fresh ocean air and watched seagulls fly, children play, neighbors greet neighbors, new puppies stumble by, and the world settling into a peaceful pre-bedtime lullaby.
When the sky started shifting toward sunset, the crowd gathered like fans clamoring to the front rows of their favorite band’s concert. I pulled out my brushes and got ready to speed paint my way through a brief but potent moment.
A hush settled through the crowd, as if everyone knew the show had begun; the Maestro, that big glowing orb, commanded the attention of every hue in the sky. As I hurried to mix the colors I was seeing, the melody of a familiar tune strengthened from the musician behind me… “There’s a blaze of light in every word…it doesn’t matter which you heard… the holy… or the broken… Hallelujah… Halleluuuujah… Hallelujahhhh…”
I stopped, looked around at my family, and softly remembered that there is a big difference between happiness and joy. And this was joy… deep, heavy, encompassing, soul-hugging, love-filled, true, unconditional joy…. with the people who are my whole world.
When the sun blinked its last little flash of light, the crowd erupted in cheers. And then, just as simply as they had come, everyone packed up and went home, closing time at the end of a long, beautiful, perfect day.
